Ghana produces about 65,431 tonnes of goat and sheep meat in 2024 on the official return and cannot say with confidence how much of that the country actually eats, because no consumption series, no per-capita figure and no continuous retail price series survive verification.2What the evidence does establish is a structural exposure, not a frozen-meat import gap: the festival and everyday trade both lean on live animals walked in from Burkina Faso and Niger, a lane both countries partially closed in 2026, and the price response to that closure has been mixed rather than uniform across Ghana’s own markets.
