Marine Fisheries

Tuna, sardinella, anchovy

USD 1 billion in annual revenue potential, and 135,000 fishers employed.

Is this a business for you?

The brief

The opportunity, what it takes to start, and the market signal, in plain terms.

The opportunity

Ghana's marine catch is worth around a billion dollars a year, but illegal fishing and weak processing bleed value away. Smoking, canning and cold chain, plus certified export access, are where an operator turns catch into margin.

🔍 The central insight

Read this sector as a shared, shrinking resource with a leaking chain built on top of it. No business here should start by trying to land more fish. Every real opening in this playbook sits after the landing: losing less, grading better, financing the gap between catch and sale, or supplying the data and certification a buyer will pay for. A shrinking raw supply raises the value of every point of loss recovered.

The market in one paragraph. Fish supplies between 50 and 80 per cent of the animal protein Ghanaians eat, with pelagic fish 71 per cent of total fish intake1, most of it small pelagic and mostly smoked. Ghana’s own fleet cannot meet demand: self-sufficiency has been falling, and the gap is filled by imports and cross-border trade. The one part of the sector in good health, tuna, earns its money from export markets, not the domestic plate, and depends on a bait stock that is itself collapsing. The opening is the value that both halves of the chain currently leave on the table: graded, traceable, well-handled fish for buyers who will pay for it, and a data layer that lets anyone underwrite a plan with confidence.
