Unlike a tree crop that locks in thirty years, a broiler cycle resets every six weeks, which changes everything. The bird is not the risk; the chick that starts the cycle is, because almost all of it is imported, priced in dollars, and only as good as the management that follows it.

Ghana loves chicken and eats more every year, but raises little of it: roughly four in every five kilograms on the plate are imported, and almost all the local meat is spent layers, not broilers. The gap between what the country eats and what it grows is the whole opportunity.

Disease, Health and Risk Profile

Disease is the single biggest destroyer of broiler margins in Ghana, and most of it is preventable: a flock lost to Newcastle or a farm shut by bird flu wipes out a cycle's profit and often the capital behind it. The main killers are known and the tools to stop them are cheap.

Production System and Regime

A broiler cycle is six to eight weeks of small daily decisions about heat, air, water, space and litter, fought against the tropical climate in an open-sided house. The breed sets a ceiling, but this management decides how close the flock gets to it, and every gram of feed converted is the margin.

Cost and Returns

Two-thirds of the cost of a broiler is feed, and both feed and chicks are priced in dollars, so the margin is thin and won on efficiency. The imported chick, the feed, the conversion gap and the birds lost to disease all resolve into one number: what a cycle costs and what it earns.

Value Chain Analysis

This follows the bird from the imported chick to the plate and finds the one broken link: processing. An imported frozen cold chain and a local fresh warm chain rarely meet on the same shelf, and building the missing processing and cold storage is where the value is caught.
