Pillar 1 showed that the breed sets a ceiling and management decides how close the flock gets to it. This pillar is that management. A broiler cycle is six to eight weeks of small daily decisions about heat, air, water, space and litter, and in a Ghanaian open-sided house, fought against the tropical climate, those decisions are where the feed bill and the profit are really settled. This is the how-to of turning an expensive chick into a saleable bird without wasting feed on the way.

Broiler farms cluster in a few places, and the reason is pure economics: feed is heavy and birds are perishable, so production sits where feed mills and buyers are close. Commercial broiler producers are concentrated in Greater Accra, Ashanti and the Bono regions around Kumasi (Onumah et al., 2023), close to the big feed mills and urban markets.

The map matters for an entrant: raising birds far from a feed mill or a town means paying to truck feed in and birds out, on margins that are already thin.

🐔 The six-week cycle, stage by stage 🐔

A broiler cycle is short and unforgiving. There is no time to recover a bad week, because the bird is sold before a mistake can be undone. The cycle runs in three stages, each with a different job and a different main risk.

🐔 Brooding: the fortnight that makes or breaks the flock 🐔

The first two weeks decide the cycle. A day-old chick cannot control its own body heat, so it depends entirely on the brooding setup to stay warm, and a chilled chick eats less, grows slowly and often dies. The target is about 30 to 32 degrees Celsius at placement, easing as the birds feather (Aviagen management handbook, 2025).

The problem is how most Ghanaian farms deliver that heat: about 93 percent of farmers brood their chicks with charcoal, and about 84 percent feed by hand (Arthur, 2024). Charcoal is cheap but uneven and risky, giving hot and cold spots, fumes, and a fire hazard, and it demands constant attention that a tired farmer cannot always give at 2am. Most of a cycle's early deaths happen here, and they are the cheapest deaths to prevent.

Brooding is the highest-leverage fortnight on the farm, and the one most often done badly. A chick lost in week one has eaten little, so the loss looks small, but it is a bird that will never earn, and poor brooding also stunts the survivors so the whole flock finishes light and late. Read plainly: money and attention spent on getting brooding right returns more than anything else in the cycle, which is exactly why a brooding service is a real business for someone who can do it well.

🐔 The tropical penalty: heat, density and litter 🐔

The breed sheet in Pillar 1 was written for a climate-controlled house in a cool country. A Ghanaian open-sided house is the opposite, and three things quietly erode the target. Heat is the first: above the bird's comfort band it eats less and gains less, so hot afternoons directly raise the feed conversion ratio. Density is the second: pack too many birds in and they overheat, foul the litter and compete for feed.

The working ceiling is about 30 kilograms of liveweight a square metre in Ghana's open-sided, naturally ventilated houses (Cobb-Vantress management guide, n.d.). Litter is the third: wet litter breeds ammonia and disease, as Pillar 3 showed. None of these needs expensive kit to manage, but all of them need attention, and that is the tropical penalty: the same bird costs more feed here unless management makes up the difference.

Every row is the same lesson: the technology that lets a European farm hit the breed sheet is missing here, and management has to substitute for it. 🐔 The proof that management, not the bird, decides the outcome 🐔

The clearest evidence for the whole pillar comes from a single Ghanaian study. When the same Cobb 500 stock was raised through three different local hatcheries and farms, total six-week mortality ranged from about 7.0 percent to 13.55 percent, and first-week mortality from about 1.95 percent to 7.70 percent (Agbehadzi et al., 2019). Same breed, same climate, same starting chick, yet nearly double the loss on the worst-managed batch. The variable was not genetics or bad luck, it was management, and most of the difference landed in the first fragile week.

This is the husbandry-not-hardware thesis proven in numbers. Because the only thing that differed was how the birds were handled, the gap between the best and worst result is a pure management gap, worth several percent of the flock. Read plainly: the cheapest way to lift a Ghanaian broiler farm's result is not a better chick or a bigger shed, it is closing the brooding-and-management gap, which is exactly where a service or an advisor adds value.

🐔 The tropical time penalty 🐔

What this means

Heat does not only raise the feed bill, it stretches the clock. A commercial broiler is built to reach market weight in about five weeks on the breed sheet, but in Ghana birds are typically sold at about eight weeks and 2.4 kilograms (Onumah et al., 2023). Three extra weeks in the house, largely because heat suppresses feed intake and growth, is time in which the bird keeps eating and the shed cannot start the next batch. That is the production root of the three-cycle-a-year ceiling whose cost consequence Pillar 5 counts.

The extra weeks are the throughput problem in disguise. A house that takes eight weeks a cycle instead of five fits fewer cycles into the year and spreads its fixed costs over less output, so the tropical penalty shows up twice, once as more feed a bird and once as fewer birds a year. Read plainly: shaving days off the cycle through better heat and husbandry management raises output without a single extra square metre of shed, which is one of the highest-return moves a producer can make.

Overcrowding and ammonia

What it is

Packing in too many birds to spread the rent overheats the flock, fouls the litter and raises ammonia, which brings respiratory disease and slow growth, so the extra birds earn less each and can cost more than they add.

Evidence

In humid tropical broiler houses, high stocking drove litter ammonia to 51 to 71 parts per million and mortality to about 10 percent at the crowded densities (Lamidi and Osunade, 2023).

The brooding-loss trap

If you want to enter with little money, master brooding. It is the fortnight most farms handle badly, it needs skill more than capital, and a good brooder can sell stronger two-week birds at a premium. Start by running a small brooding batch under a farmer who will let you learn, and watch how chick behaviour, not just the thermometer, tells you the temperature is right. Underwrite the management system, and treat any farm running at breed-sheet FCR claims with scepticism until it is measured on site.

For ecosystem actors

The lever is husbandry capacity: training, extension and affordable equipment that help open-sided farms manage heat, water, litter and brooding. Measure success as the fall in average feed conversion ratio and cycle mortality across supported farms, not as sheds built. The failure to avoid is financing houses and birds without the management skills to run them, which produces underperforming flocks and defaulted loans, the pattern past programmes have repeated.
